Learning involves the whole person, where knowledge, our relational actions, and well-being weave together. It is a coming together of our heart, head, and hands, where social and emotional learning (SEL) provides a foundation for knowledge learning and harmonious relations. A core focus of educational leadership in these pandemic times, is providing the SEL conditions and support for teachers and students (with the support of parents) to learn with a greater reliance on digital technology. Cases from New Zealand illustrate the prioritising of pastoral care as a precursor for student learning, as well as skilfully using digital technology and connecting well with parents. However, in these pandemic times, reliance on digital technology may also create challenges, such as increasing issues of inequity and challenges to student learning, as well as possible teacher exhaustion. In this workshop, the focus is on steps school leaders and teachers can take to prioritise SEL.
