This presentation details different tactics to ascertain the truthfulness of what you find online. I argue that consumers of information must engage with several different approaches to ascertain any truth. First, consumers must consider all evidence together and check multiple sources. We must learn to note which evidence is direct and which is indirect, paying specific attention to ask if evidence is missing and then investigate that gap with rigour. Consumers must always ask, ‘what don’t I know?’ Reliable journalism is transparent about where information comes from and what facts are unknown. If that is not a parent, it is likely not reliable journalism. Statements can be verified through independent, repeatable fact checking sites, or independently by news consumers seeking direct evidence from authoritative sources.
